Star Trek and the Posthuman
Rethinking Our Relationship with Technology
We live in an era of rapid technological change. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence—from self-driving cars to large language models like ChatGPT—have reshaped nearly every aspect of life, from how we work to how we imagine our future selves. The question of what it means to be human in an age of increasingly human-like machines looms larger than ever. Yet this question isn’t new. As far back as the 1960s, popular culture—especially Star Trek—was exploring the boundary between human and machine, wrestling with the implications of artificial minds, digital realities, and cyborg bodies.
In what follows, I consider how Star Trek (across the original series, The Next Generation, and Voyager) gradually rethinks the human-machine interface. Where some theorists today speak ominously of the “posthuman”—a condition in which our biological bodies, even our consciousness itself, might be transcended or rendered irrelevant—Star Trek offers a more measured, philosophically compelling view. Indeed, the franchise suggests that while technology pushes us to question the line between human and machine, there is ample space for new forms of “humane” technology that do not necessarily signal “the end of man.”
The Cultural Moment
Contemporary debates about superintelligent AI, brain-computer interfaces, and genetic enhancements echo many of the anxieties and hopes that have circulated for decades. Futurists such as Ray Kurzweil have prophesied a moment of “singularity” where humanity merges with AI. Others fear a dystopia in which machines eclipse human values or reduce our agency—think of The Matrix or the Terminator franchise. Scholars in what some call “posthuman studies” highlight the fragility of human uniqueness, claiming that biology itself could be superseded, pushing us into a radically new stage of evolution.
But the tension in these debates often stems from an unhelpful binary: either we celebrate the coming posthuman or fear it. Either technology is the ultimate liberator or the ultimate destroyer. Star Trek offers a strikingly different picture, one that emerges through characters like Data (The Next Generation), Seven of Nine (Voyager), and the Emergency Medical Hologram Doctor (Voyager). These are “marginal beings,” straddling the line between human and machine, and forcing the audience to keep asking: What, exactly, remains distinctively human in a technologically enhanced universe?
Star Trek’s Evolving Concern
In the original Star Trek (often referred to as TOS: The Original Series), many stories showcase powerful computers or robots run amok—Nomad in “The Changeling,” Landru in “Return of the Archons,” or M5 in “The Ultimate Computer.” The show’s standard move is to reaffirm human superiority by having Captain Kirk either “out-logic” these rogue intelligences or reveal their inherent limits. TOS frequently draws a bright line between humans and machines, and it never really doubts that humans come out on top in that comparison.
By The Next Generation (TNG), though, the conversation has become more nuanced. Androids, most notably Data, are no longer simply misguided or menacing. Data wants to be more human, not less. The show invests significant time exploring whether Data deserves rights—“The Measure of a Man”—and pushes us to ask whether certain characteristics (such as creativity, emotion, or moral responsibility) are what truly define humanity. At the same time, TNG offers the cyborg menace of the Borg Collective, which forcibly assimilates entire civilizations. The Borg represent technology turned totalitarian, threatening to erase individuality. Paradoxically, TNG also makes one of the most humanistic statements in science fiction: even against ruthless, hive-minded cyborgs, a combination of human empathy and moral principle can—and often does—prevail.
Then comes Voyager, which takes yet another step forward. The show continues the Borg threat but adds a new perspective by introducing Seven of Nine, a liberated Borg drone who must “learn” to be human again. And the Emergency Medical Hologram (the Doctor) acquires unexpected sentience, grappling with very human questions of ethics, loyalty, and creativity. If TOS asked whether humans could be outsmarted by computers, Voyager wants to know: how do we teach a once-enslaved Borg drone compassion and autonomy? How does a hologram “earn” the respect of a living crew?
Taken together, TOS, TNG, and Voyager trace a fascinating evolution in how Star Trek addresses one fundamental question: Can technology remain subordinate to, or even seamlessly woven into, our human values? Or is it bound to be an alien force, a threat to the “authentic” human experience?
Upholding Humanity—But Redefining It
One crucial insight Star Trek offers is that these halfway beings—androids, holograms, cyborgs—regularly highlight what we consider most precious about being human. For instance, Data’s perpetual quest to understand laughter or art or intuition is a reminder that our identities are more than just logical processes. The Doctor’s comedic anxieties and social faux pas highlight the importance of empathy, emotional intelligence, and the messy, imperfect relationships that define us. Even Seven of Nine, after years of Borg assimilation, has to reconnect with the vulnerabilities and yearnings of her former human self.
This point matters: in an era of AI chatbots and neural implants, many worry that we’re losing our essential “humanness”—that we’ll become mechanical or that machines will surpass the emotional depth and moral reasoning that ground our sense of self. Star Trek doesn’t dismiss these anxieties; the Borg remain a genuine threat, symbolizing what happens when technology absorbs individuality and empathy. However, the show repeatedly insists that people can, in fact, reassert or reclaim core human values—even after assimilation.
The Failure of Technological “Perfection”
Where some transhumanist theorists predict or even cheer for humanity’s wholesale transition into the digital realm—body and consciousness uploaded—Star Trek is consistently skeptical. Time and again, the franchise reminds us that attempts to achieve immortality or “perfection” by transferring the mind into an android body end in disaster (Korby in “What Are Little Girls Made Of?,” or Dr. Ira Graves in “The Schizoid Man”). These characters lose precisely those qualities—emotional connection, self-awareness, and moral understanding—that once made them human.
Likewise, the Borg’s so-called “pursuit of perfection” never looks appealing. It’s an authoritarian, hyper-rational assimilation that leaves no room for the subtleties of personal choice, love, or independent thought. Star Trek underscores that while technology can enhance certain capabilities, if it attempts to eradicate imperfection by eradicating humanity’s messier sides—emotion, creativity, contradiction—it also destroys the deeper beauty of life.
Controlling or Nurturing the Machine?
In TOS, if a computer or AI crosses the boundary of legitimate control (threatening to enslave humans or disrupt human autonomy), Captain Kirk typically dismantles or tricks it into self-destruction. This approach reflects a Cold War–era mentality: technology is powerful but must be managed, contained, or destroyed when it tries to take over.
Over time, though, Star Trek explores another possibility: what if we treat the “machine” as something that needs socialization, not just control? Data and Lore (his dangerous “evil twin”) dramatize this idea. Lore, never loved or nurtured, becomes murderous and hateful; Data, by contrast, is integrated into a supportive environment, learns from his crewmates, and aspires to moral responsibility. Similarly, the Doctor and Seven of Nine in Voyager undergo a form of “adoption” into the crew, slowly absorbing the Federation’s empathetic, communal ethos.
In a contemporary context, imagine that same approach to AI, robotics, or gene editing. Star Trek suggests that new technologies—and the intelligent systems that arise from them—require what philosopher Annette Baier calls “the arts of personhood.” Personhood, in Baier’s view, isn’t just about autonomy or rationality; it’s about the social interplay of caring, moral accountability, and the recognition that we’re all “second persons,” shaped by relationships with others. Machines that merely emulate logic or solve tasks may remain coldly impersonal, but those embedded in a community, taught compassion, and recognized as part of a shared moral world might—like Data—learn to honor human values rather than subvert them.
Toward a More Feminist Model of Technology
Another rich thread in Star Trek is the recurring theme that “masculine” visions of technology—those emphasizing competition, domination, or perfect rationality—quickly generate conflict. In both TNG and Voyager, the marginal beings who fare best are those guided by empathy, social bonding, and care work, qualities often coded as “feminine.” Think of Dr. Beverly Crusher mentoring Data, or Captain Janeway patiently guiding Seven of Nine. What we see here is a subtler commentary on how technological evolution might profit from virtues traditionally associated with parenting and community-building.
Feminist theorists of technology studies, such as Judy Wajcman, argue that we should stop seeing technology as a “foreign” intruder and start seeing it as a culture in which social values can and do get embedded. If we embed values of care, mutual aid, and inclusivity in our machines—rather than pure efficiency or profit—then the very nature of technology could shift. We don’t have to pit “human” and “machine” against each other in a zero-sum battle. The shift is from technology as an alien tool to technology as a co-created partner, shaped by the best of humanity.
Star Trek’s Middle Path
Where many popular theories divide neatly into pro-technology or anti-technology camps, Star Trek takes the middle path. It neither laments an inevitable robot uprising nor blindly praises the dawn of the posthuman. Instead, it repeatedly illustrates that the boundary between human and machine is neither fixed nor doomed to vanish in a tidal wave of metal and code.
Yes, advanced technologies can threaten human uniqueness, especially when they demand conformity or value pure rationality at the expense of empathy. But Star Trek insists there’s another way: a rethinking of both humanity and technology that centers relationships, emotional intelligence, and social responsibility. Seven of Nine’s reconnection to her human past, Data’s quest to become fully human, and the Doctor’s journey to ethical personhood all embody this principle. It’s less about escaping our “flawed” humanity and more about inviting technology into the human fold on humane terms.
Conclusion
As AI systems rapidly evolve and wearable or implantable technologies blur the boundary between flesh and machine, many of us wonder how—or if—our essential humanity will endure. The Star Trek franchise, across its decades of storytelling, offers reassurance without complacency. It reminds us that staying human isn’t a matter of stopping progress; it’s a matter of guiding it. When intelligent machines are integrated in a community that prizes compassion, social responsibility, and a willingness to see the machine as a potential partner (not just a threat or a mindless tool), entirely new forms of collaboration emerge.
For all its phasers, warp drives, and fictional technologies, Star Trek ultimately points us back to something deeply real: we are social creatures who learn who we are by nurturing one another and by protecting the moral, creative, and emotional dimensions of our shared life. If the future includes machines that learn these same arts—if we “raise” them rather than simply build them—perhaps the line between human and machine will not vanish. Instead, it might become a meeting place for mutual growth. Rather than living in fear of an AI-driven posthuman future, we might embrace technology in a way that, as Star Trek has always shown, extends the best of who we are well beyond the stars.
